We like to be honest and upfront. This is not your typical FAQ page. We’ll discuss the REAL concerns and questions you have.

How long does it take to become a Black Belt?
Attaining the Grade of Black Belt should be no easy feat. Also, the problem giving an exact time frame lies in the fact that most Martial Arts Schools have different teachings.
At FitRoots, students in our Adult’s Programme are eligible, and it generally takes 8 years (on average) of training under our system and syllabus to achieve their Black Belt.
How many times a week should I or my child train?
Like anything in life, the more you do it, the better you will become at it. We recommend starting on twice/week where possible.
For students on our Adults Programmes, we only accept those who are willing to train twice/week, unless under exceptional circumstances.
For students on our Kids Programmes, they can start on once/week to begin with.
Therefore, in terms of Grading, students training once/week will only be able to participate in their first Grading, after which, they will be expected to train twice/week so they can progress.
Is it possible to compete in Martial Arts competitions?
Yes. For the right student, you will have the opportunity to put your skills to the test in a safe, yet challenging environment.
Similarly, we are of the belief that you should spend considerable time honing your skills first, before thinking about competing.
We don’t push the prospect of competing on you, and would rather encourage development in all areas of your life first, so that you are living as a Martial Artist, rather than just acting like one.
What is involved in the FitRoots Grading Syllabus?
The Syllabus is split up into three sections:
The Physical tests for Martial Arts, Biomechanics, Posture, Breathing, and Functional Strength.
The Mental tests for knowledge in Philosophy, Psychology, and Biology.
Finally, the Purpose tests for practical application to each student’s life, and creating a positive impact on the local community too.
Can I buy the Starter Pack after I’ve joined?
The Starter Pack gives you everything you need to get started on the right path straight away.
If you buy your Starter Pack straight after your Free Taster Class, you will benefit from not having to pay a Joining Fee of £49.
If you decide not to purchase the Starter Pack after your Free Taster Class, you will have up to two weeks purchase it, and will have to pay the £49 Joining Fee straight after your Free Taster Class.
How many students are there in a class?
There is anywhere between 5-20 students in a class. Of course this depends on the day, the programme, and so on.
We find that most people want more guidance in their classes for themselves, and/or their children. So, regardless of whether we have more students in a class, we will make sure that there is a good ratio of instructors to students.
How many instructors are there in a class?
In Adult’s classes, there is at least 1 instructor. For Kid’s classes, there are at least 2 instructors.
Also, we make sure you get the proper attention you deserve in each and every class, so that you can consistently develop. With this in mind, even when student numbers increase, we endeavour to have the right ratio of students – instructors.
Is there physical contact during training?
Yes. However, if you are not ready for sparring (controlled contact to practice your techniques), we are not going to let you do so.
However, sparring is only done for 7 years old and above (7 – 12 year olds avoid head contact). We always aim to make sure you’re ready to push yourself, but in a safe and fun environment.

How much is Grading?
The cost of Grading depends on what belt you are testing for.
So, to keep it simple, the first grade is £30. We will be sure to let you know well in advance of every Grading, and we only allow students to grade when they are ready.
We are against regular Gradings, as many Martial Arts Schools use this to give students belts they don’t deserve, just so it looks good, and they can make loads of money out of you.
Above all, we think it’s unethical to give people grades they don’t deserve. We want you to have earnt your grade and be proud of it.
How often is Grading?
FitRoots Gradings take place three times a year. However, this is just so you have the opportunity to grade at different times of the year.
It’s not a chance for you to grade three times a year! The likelihood is that you will only grade once a year, but this is dependent on the individual, some will be slower, some a little faster.
What is the male to female ratio?
It’s roughly 50:50.
Of course it depends on the day and who turns up. When you’re getting started, we’ll make sure you’re with an appropriate partner for the exercises, and are always in a good line of sight from The FitRoots Team.
Will I get hurt?
It’s very unlikely. Each and every student at FitRoots understands that you have to be there to help each other. Hence, everyone must leave their ego at the door, and be ready to come to class with the right attitude, and that is to train hard, but have fun, and be safe at the same time.
The FitRoots Team is always on hand to make sure that everyone is being responsible, and is under strict guidance to minimise the risk of injuries at all times.
Do we run classes all year around?
Near enough. Apart from Bank Holidays, and the Christmas/New Years period, we’re there and ready to teach you and your family.
We don’t believe in taking the whole of Easter or Summer off, as most students would have forgotten much of what they’ve learnt by then.
It’s important for you and your family to train in a Martial Arts School that has classes consistently, year around.
What do I wear to class?
Light and comfortable clothing. After 2 – 3 weeks, you will receive your full FitRoots Uniform, and you will be expected to wear that to every class thereafter.
If you or your child are training more than once/week, we recommend that you get an extra set of uniform for hygiene reasons, unless you can catch the washing machine in time!
What if I don’t like the programme?
It’s very rare that someone doesn’t like our programmes at FitRoots. But we also understand that we’re not a good fit for everybody. Hopefully, that’s not you.
But if that is you, no problem at all. If you join us, and you don’t like it, for whatever reason, we’ll happily refund you, with our 7 Day Money Back Guarantee.
Most of the time that doesn’t happen, as we establish if we’re a good fit for you before you even come in for your first class.
Do you offer Pay As You Go?
No. It’s not worth if for you, or for us.
If you’re a good fit, and we can help you, we want you to join our Community for good. Our programmes are a lot more in depth than just classes, and you get a lot of support and resources outside of class.
We can’t offer this level of support, and get you great results if you’re on Pay As You Go. We’re happy to recommend other Martial Arts Schools who offer Pay As You Go if that’s the better path for you.
What Martial Arts do you teach?
Mostly Kickboxing. However, we don’t believe in the “one style is better than the rest” frame of mind. As a result, we take the best bits from other Martial Arts, and integrate them into our syllabus.
In addition, our instructors are versed not just in Kickboxing, but Boxing, Muay Thai, Wing Chun, Wushu, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and more. This is so you can learn the best parts of Martial Arts, all in one place.
What will you need from me?
As a student, or parent to a FitRoots student, all we ask is that you are willing to give your best self inside and outside of class, so that you can not just see, but feel, and live the benefits of our Martial Arts programme in your own life.
Also, we want you to get the best results possible, and experience Martial Arts as a way of life, and so that it positively impacts every area of your life.
What age ranges are in the Adults Programme?
The Adults Programme at FitRoots starts for 13 years +. However, it’s mostly adults in the classes, ranging anywhere from 18 – 62! So, whatever age you are, we’ll make sure you fit right in.
How long does it take to learn Martial Arts?
It depends, on what you mean by ‘learn Martial Arts’? If you’re just looking to be able to defend yourself, then you can become fairly competent (under the right guidance, and depending on the individual), within a year.
But if you want to really learn Martial Arts, then see it as a lifelong journey and practice, rather than just another activity.
Do you train fighters?
Some of our students choose to compete, but it’s probably less than 5%. We are not a competition focused Martial Arts School, but happily encourage students to test themselves when they are ready.
So, if you’re a professional fighter looking for a Martial Arts School, we’re probably not for you. We’re happy to recommend other Martial Arts Schools which cater specifically for professional fighters. Just reach out to us, and we’ll let you know where to go.
What happens if I miss a class?
We get it, you’re not always going to make every class you intend to.
With that in mind, you’re welcome to attend any of our other classes (in your relevant programme) throughout the week. Similarly, it’s best to set the right intention and habits from the start, and if you can, ensure you come to the classes you’ve signed up for, so you get the most from your training.
Which Martial Art is right for me?
It comes down to what you’d like to learn. There are four main styles/types of Martial Arts:
- Striking – e.g. Kickboxing
- Grappling – e.g. Wrestling
- Armed – e.g. Eskrima
- Health & Spiritual – e.g. Tai Chi
What if I’m not very flexible?
That’s ok. Most people start off feeling like you too. The great thing is that Martial Arts, when practiced properly, teaches your whole body to work together as one unit.
Consequently, a lack of flexibility is usually due to dysfunctional movement patterns, which we will help you fix too. If there are things you can’t do, our instructors will make sure you build good foundations first.
What if I’ve never tried anything like this before?
Perfect. Most people who train with us, started off just like you, with no experience in Martial Arts at all. Above all, you’ll be taken care of not just by the FitRoots instructors, but also by your fellow students, who felt just like you when they started as well.
How does Martial Arts prevent bullying?
Simply put, confident, assertive, and self-aware people know their worth, and stand up for what they believe in.
So, if you or your child are being bullied, Martial Arts is one of the few things which actually helps people not just transform physically, but mentally too.
If you are confident, and know how to conduct yourself, you are aware of your own character (and others’), so you won’t get bullied as easily. Bullies rely on easy targets, and true practitioners of Martial Arts are the wrong target for a bully to pick.
How does Martial Arts teach focus and discipline?
Learning Martial Arts, is one of the few things in existence which forces you to be present, focused, and disciplined whilst you are practising.
The skills, drills, and techniques learnt in classes, requires deep concentration, or as we like to call it, a dynamic meditation. When you then go to apply your techniques, let’s say in Sparring, you have to be extremely focused for safety reasons.
More importantly, Martial Arts is a way of life, and when you are taught to understand your character, you will see how you can enhance the rest of your life, and use your new found focus and discipline outside of class.
I don’t want to fight or compete, can I still join?
Of course you can, in fact, most of our students never fight, or express that they don’t want to fight or compete at all, and that’s absolutely fine with us.
Probably at least 95% of our students don’t want to participate in competitions, and we make sure that our focus is on your physical, mental, and spiritual development. We want you to join to achieve your own goals, and if we can help you aim higher, and achieve more in good time, then we’re happy for you.
Do you offer discounts?
Yes. If you decide to join us with a ‘Pay For The Year’ membership, you will save 10% immediately on your membership fees, and receive a few goodies as a thank you for your commitment.
Also, if two or more family members from the same household are training together, then you will be entitled to 10% off each membership.

I don’t want to be tied into a contract, what do you offer?
Sure, we get it, times have changed, and you don’t want to be tied down by something you can’t use.
As a result, we don’t have a contract which will force you to pay if you don’t want to be a part of our Community. All we ask for is one full calendar month’s notice, and we can waive the remainder of your membership.
What’s included in the Membership fees?
Memberships at FitRoots involve lots of great things, but here’s the main ones:
- Access to our classes focusing on physical, mental, and spiritual development
- Online group resources
- Coaching outside of class with your fellow students and instructors
Can I bring a friend/family?
Of course you can. We love friends and families that train together. It’s great to have something outside of your normal social circle or home situations which brings you together with those you love, to improve one another.
If you’re thinking of bringing a friend and/or family member, then just ask them to reach out to us, and we’ll be happy to have a chat with them to answer their questions.
Will I learn to defend myself?
Yes. Learning to defend yourself effectively, and learning genuine Martial Arts comes hand in hand.
Therefore, if learning to defend yourself is a priority of yours, let us know, and we’ll even be happy give you some extra tips based on your body type, situation, strengths, and weaknesses – so if push comes to shove, you’ll always be ready.
How do you choose the right Martial Arts School?
It’s hard to choose the right Martial Arts School nowadays, especially as there’s so many options out there. It can be confusing for you to make the right pick.
Also, we suggest that you do your research first, i.e. check out their reviews, website, social media etc. then see whether you like the look, feel, and content of what is being taught.
Once you are comfortable with that, then make sure you can pop in for a Free Taster Class.
The main thing would be to ensure that they have a syllabus which combines teachings from the physical, mental, and spiritual areas of Martial Arts, otherwise, you probably won’t apply the teachings outside of class.
What ability level are the classes?
The classes have a mixed level of ability, and are geared at all levels of students, regardless of what level they are at, or how long they have been training for.
We make this set up a success by having those students who are of an Intermediate and Advanced ability train together, and those who are Beginners, train together, under the watchful eye of The FitRoots Team.
So, whatever level you are currently at, we will be able to help you reach your goals.
Why are we so expensive?
Maybe it’s true, we are more expensive than a lot of Martial Arts Schools, but our programmes, syllabuses, and process get great results. If you want to Master Your Life with Martial Arts, the methods taught to you must not only be the best, but taught in the most thorough way too.
So, how much would you pay for guaranteed results?

How many instructors are there at FitRoots?
We have 5 instructors at FitRoots. Each has their unique background in Martial Arts, which brings a varied skill set and contribution to The FitRoots Syllabus.
Hopefully, you will get to meet all of them in person, but if you’d like to get to know us beforehand, check us out here.
Can I train with an injury?
First of all, it depends on the nature of the injury. If it’s a minor injury, then in most cases you will be able to train without a problem.
Instructors are versed in helping students work around injuries, rather than just encouraging students to take time off.
However, if The FitRoots Team thinks you are unable to begin training, or continue training, we will let you know. Your safety and health is our priority.
So, if you’re unsure if you can start training, just reach out to us here, and we’ll be happy to have a quick chat first. At the least we can recommend what’s best for you to begin with.
Do I need to get fit before I start?
No. This is a really common fear for adults before they get started at FitRoots. There’s no need to worry about your current fitness levels, and you’re certainly not alone.
What matters is where you are going, and where you want to be. The FitRoots Team will work with you to make sure that you can join in with everyone, and feel comfortable from your first day. There are plenty of people who are starting out, and feel exactly the same.
Join our community of like-minded students, and you will be giving and receiving support from all directions before you know it.
Do you only serve students in Slough?
No. We have students who come from fairly far away to train with us. However, most of our students are from the Slough and surrounding areas like Langley, Burnham, Cippenham, Datchet, Windsor, Eton, Uxridge, Hayes areas etc.
Also, once we are fully set up in Slough, we will be branching out to other areas. Soon, we will be launching our Online Membership Programme, so you can learn from us wherever you are.
I’d like some 1 – 1 Personal Training sessions before I join your classes, do you offer them?
Yes. 1-1 Personal Training is a great way to get you started with your health and wellbeing goals on the right foot.

What is Martial Arts?
Martial Arts organised systems and codes combat, which are primarily practiced for physical, mental, and spiritual development, and self-defence.
The term ‘Martial Arts’ originates from Latin, and means ‘arts of Mars’, referring to Mars, who was the Roman god of war. Others have dubbed it the ‘Art of War’ after the ancient Chinese military treatise by Sun Tzu, which was created around 5th Century BCE (Before the Common Era).
What is Kickboxing?
Kickboxing is a Japanese hybrid Martial Art based on kicking and punching. It was developed by adapting techniques used in Karate, Western Boxing, and Muay Thai. It originated in the late 1950s in Japan, and grew in popularity in the West over next 10 years. By the mid 1960s, the first true Kickboxing events were being held in Osaka.
Why should I choose FitRoots over other places?
FitRoots is the only place (as far we’re aware) that teaches the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of Martial Arts under one roof.
Furthermore, our students learn about Martial Arts in the fullest sense of the tradition. That includes learning about Philosophy, Psychology, Biology, and much more. Normally, you’d have to go to many different places to learn these subjects, but we truly believe Martial Arts in the modern world, has to be about more than just kicking and punching, but just as much about how you can apply the teachings, to the rest of your life too.
Therefore, if you’re not interested in learning these other subjects, then we’re probably not a good fit for you. But if you are, then we would love to serve you.
Are the instructors qualified & DBS Checked?
Certainly; we only have the best instructors teach at FitRoots. We believe being able to teach you is an honour, and that we must have the best teachers, methods, and classes, so that you see the value in training with us and joining The FitRoots Community.
In addition, all instructors are thoroughly vetted before joining the team, they are DBS Checked, and are put through the FitRoots programme, to ensure they are all teaching the same syllabus, in an effective way. As a result, each instructor brings their own expertise and specialities, which you will get to experience too.
Kid's Programme Questions
What age can my child start from?
Your child can begin training with us from two years old. Our first programme (Mini Monkeys) is specifically for 2 – 3 year olds, so they will fit right in.
So, if you’re unsure about the suitability of which programme is best for your child, and when they should start, please reach out to us here, and we can discuss what you want for your little one, and their character development.
What is the best age to start Martial Arts?
The best age to start is now. We’re true believers in starting as soon as you can, especially if you want to get good at it from a young age.
Because our Mini Monkeys (who are only 2 and 3 years old) truly show us how Martial Arts can positively enhance a child’s life, from such an early age.
Hence, for anyone else, the best time to start is now!
Can I stay and watch my child during their classes?
Of course. We have a seating area for you, so you can watch your child develop. We believe parents must take an active role in their child’s development, and ideally, it’s best for you to watch and stay for classes.
Also, if you can’t always be there, that’s fine too, but we recommend you’re there more than you’re not.
My child is disruptive in group environments, can they join?
That’s ok. They’re more than welcome to join us. We want to help families like yourself, who have children that can be challenging at times.
Similarly, we understand that not every child is the same, and that they can’t all be taught in the same way. So, it would be best for us to have a quick chat together, and see what things can be put in place to help your child before they come in to class.

Can I train with my child?
Maybe, it depends how old your child is, and their ability level.
So, if they are 13 years old + they will most likely join our Adult’s Programme. However, if they are 12 years old or younger, then they will be a part of our Kid’s Programmes. Furthermore, we assess students on a case by case basis, so if their ability exceeds their peers, then it’s possible for them to train in the adult’s classes.
How do we teach 2 – 3 Year Olds?
Our Mini Monkeys Programme, is specifically for 2 – 3 year olds. It’s a unique Parent – Toddler class where the children learn by following simple instructions, through auditory and visual cues, so they are able to develop their communication skills in a group environment.
As a result, they learn the fundamentals of Martial Arts in a fun, yet structured way. We’d love for you and your toddler to come and try for yourself. Feel free to get in contact with us here, and we will be happy to get to know your little one before you come down for your Free Taster Class.
